Prior to purchase, I saw mixed reviews on the new generation. Initially the transmission seemed to be a bit jumpy. But is it a learning transmission. I took it out on a 700 mile trip through flat lands and mountain passes. The transmission settled down and is now really smooth. I would suspect if you driver it hard, the transmission will remember that and learn accordingly. The engine seems to have plenty of power and if you need a little more spunk for hills and towing, there is a button on the dash below the 4x4 nob that will change the shift patter. The seats are great. The new model seats are a bit more elevated that the previous years. Still could use a little more option for adjustment, but it is adequate. Mine has the lumbar adjustment, very effective and easy to us. I am 6 foot and I fit just fine in the truck with head room to spare. I test drove a Sport model as well. The Sport seats seem to set you lower into the seat and the bolsters were a bit to aggressive for me. I found my self having to lift myself out of the Sport seat to try to get out. The SR5 seats sit up a bit more and I just slide out of them. My SR5 came with a factory installed tonneau cover and the tow package, which I highly recommend both. Initially the suspension seemed a bit bouncy on ruff roads, but after the long drive on various roads and terrain, it seems to have settled down. Around town I am averaging 18-19 mpg. But, out on the highway at 65 to 70 mph I saw 24. Anything over 75 dropped the mileage down to 21. The truck is really easy to maneuver in parking lots/spaces. If fits well inside of the garage.

Bought a 2019 Tacoma TRD Off-Road 4 months ago. It is a well-equipped truck with auto transmission, Premium and Technology packages. Pros: (1) excellent value - truck has leather seats, power moonroof, dual climate control, power rear slider, navigation, JBL sound, rear sonar, blind spot monitor, etc. TRD Off Road includes rear locker, Bilstein shocks, all-terrain tires, etc. Considering the amount of equipment for the price, Tacoma offers great value. (2) Excellent assembly quality - the truck feels solid, interior materials feel of good quality. The interior is quiet and refined...most of the time. (3) Off road capability - truck feels at its best on the trail. Bilstein shocks provide surprising comfort on the trail, and the rear locker makes it capable overcoming moderate obstacles. Cons: (1) irritating automatic transmission - simply atrocious. It is calibrated to save gas, climbs to the highest gear and then refuses to move from there. The truck drives okay around town. But once you hit 45+ MPH, the automatic drawbacks become increasingly irritating. Tall gearing only adds for a poor driving experience. (2) Uncomfortable driving position and cramped interior - the seats are too close to the floor and the steering wheel too far forward. My leg cramps after driving for 45+ minutes. Rear seats are good for small children. (3) Engine loses composure and runs out of breath easily - the 3.5 V6 runs quiet and refined around town. However, the moment you press it, all composure goes out the window. Tall gearing and the recalcitrant transmission only make things worse. The driveline makes miscellaneous vibrations between 35 and 80 MPH. Dealers claim that these vibrations to be “normal.”
  • Exactly what I was looking for in a truck

This is my 2nd Tacoma Double Cab (1st one was an 06 with a 4Runner in between). I was waiting for the new Ford Ranger but ended up purchasing the TRD Off Road 4X4 because I couldn't pass up the year end deal. It is a solid truck, and will be for many years of ownership. While I agree with the transmission complaints, it does get better gas mileage than my 06 by a couple of MPGs. I don't use the cruise control in the mountains as it will shift and rev constantly. To me that is a small annoyance I have learned to live with. The radar cruise control on flat terrain works great. I am average height and lived with the seating position in my previous model. Not a problem for me. The Crawl Control is outstanding! I am confident this truck will get me out of most off road situations. Also, I was originally looking at the Limited model, but that model uses the standard base model shocks. The upgraded Bilsteins on the TRD Off Road ride much nicer in my opinion and the off road tires are surprisingly quite at speed. My only real complaint, and it is minor, is that the central locking does not lock the tail gate. You have to pull the key out of the fob to lock it. If that is my only real compliant, then I made the right choice.
